Belgian Hare

There's no other domestic rabbit which looks quite like a Belgian Hare - which isn't really a hare at all. It's a rabbit, descended from European wild rabbits, just like all other domestic rabbits. However, it looks very much like a hare (or a jackrabbit of the American West, which is actually a hare) - huge ears, and much thinner, longer and generally "rangier" than most rabbits. It has an ideal adult weight of 6 to 9.5 pounds. The fur is a deep red/brown, and the underside of the tail is white. There is a "ticking" of longer black hairs over the back and hips.

The Belgian Hare rabbit is a rare breed, listed by the American Livestock Conservancy as "Threatened". According to the Rabbitgeek.com list, based on ARBA registrations, they are no. 11 on the rarest breeds list.
